Magna Carta Day
Every year, on the closest Saturday to the 15th June, Egham celebrates Magna Carta. From brass bands to belly dancers and beyond, it is an eclectic day that starts typically at 11am and finishes around 4pm. On Magna Carta 2015, the 13th June, over 1400 people visited Egham Museum’s pop-up exhibition in the United Church, while visitors on the High Street heard Magna Carta songs we commissioned written and performed by Jenny Lockyer.
Magna Carta Challenge Badge
We worked with local Guide leaders to produce a Magna Carta challenge badge and activity pack.
Magna Carta Debates
Egham Museum, Cumberland Lodge and The Inner Temple collaborated to offer pupils a day of debate workshops with the issue of detention without trial as our theme.
Magna Carta Moot
On the 19th June 2015, 800 years after the sealing of Magna Carta, 26 students of Law from Strode’s College, whose campus adjoins the historic meadows of Runnymede, took part in a Moot in the highest court in the United Kingdom.
Here at the Supreme Court our local Law students debated the case of R v Croker, Bridger, Peach and Altabani, a trial that proceeded without a jury, and questioned whether this violated the principle of clause 39 of Magna Carta, (c.1hr7mins long).
Magna Carta Constitutional Conventions
Each year, in 2014, 2015 and 2016, between 80 and 100 delegates from across the country gathered at Runnymede to debate and draft a modern Magna Carta for the nation.
